Jaw clamps versus flexible probes

A rigid jaw is faster on accessible conductors, but limited by jaw opening. Flexible iFlex-style probes wrap around busbars and cable bundles that no jaw will fit, and extend the current range substantially — a 1000 A meter typically reads 2500 A with a flexible probe fitted.

For work on variable frequency drives, low-pass filtering matters more than range. Without it, switching noise makes the reading meaningless.

Milliamp process clamps

The 771, 772 and 773 solve a specific problem: reading a 4-20 mA control loop without breaking it. On processes that cannot tolerate an interrupted loop, this changes what work can be done while running.

They hold value well and are worth buying tested, since the measurement depends on a sensitive Hall-effect sensor that does not tolerate being dropped.

Common questions

Are used clamp meters accurate after years of use?

Yes, provided the jaw faces are undamaged and clean. We check zero drift and current accuracy against a reference source before listing.

Can I use a clamp meter on DC?

Only models specified as AC/DC, which use a Hall-effect sensor. AC-only clamps use a current transformer and read nothing on DC.

What does iFlex compatibility mean?

The meter accepts a flexible Rogowski coil probe in place of or alongside its jaw, extending range and reach. The probe is a separate item.
