Power quality analyzers are specified by the standard they meet rather than by feature list. IEC 61000-4-30 Class A instruments produce results that hold up in a dispute with a utility; Class S instruments do not.

Class A versus Class S

Class A defines measurement methods precisely enough that two compliant instruments will agree. If your findings might be challenged — a utility dispute, a warranty claim, a contractual power quality clause — Class A is what you need.

Class S instruments such as the Fluke 1736 and 1738 are lighter, cheaper and entirely adequate for load studies, energy assessments and internal troubleshooting.

Current probes are half the purchase

A three-phase analyzer needs four current probes, and flexible probes such as the i430flex sets represent a substantial part of the package value. An analyzer listed without probes is not ready to use.

Check the probe ranges match your work. A 6000 A flexible probe has poor resolution on a 30 A branch circuit.

Common questions

Do I need Class A?

Only if your measurements may be disputed or used for compliance. For energy studies and internal fault-finding, Class S is sufficient and considerably cheaper.

Are current probes included?

It varies by listing and is always stated. We can supply matched probe sets separately.

How long can these instruments log?

Modern analyzers with SD storage log for weeks. Confirm the memory card and mains adapter are included for long deployments.
