Buying a used oscilloscope: what actually matters

Bandwidth, sample rate, record length, probes and licensed options — how to read an oscilloscope specification and avoid paying for capability you will not use.

Oscilloscope specifications are written to be compared, which is not the same as being written to be understood. Two scopes with identical headline bandwidth can behave very differently, and the differences that matter are rarely the ones printed largest.

Bandwidth: the five-times rule

Bandwidth is the frequency at which the scope's response has fallen by 3 dB — at that point you are already measuring 30% low. The working rule is that your scope bandwidth should be at least five times the highest frequency component you care about.

For digital signals, the frequency that matters is not the clock rate but the edge rate. A 10 MHz clock with 2 ns edges contains meaningful energy up to roughly 175 MHz, which is why a 100 MHz scope shows a rounded square wave and a 500 MHz scope shows the overshoot you were looking for.

Many scopes are bandwidth-limited in firmware and can be upgraded by licence. A used 200 MHz unit that upgrades to 1 GHz is often better value than buying the higher model outright — check whether the upgrade transfers with the instrument.

Sample rate and record length

Sample rate should be at least 2.5 times bandwidth, and most modern scopes comfortably exceed this. The number to watch is whether the quoted rate is per channel or shared: many scopes halve their sample rate when you turn on the second channel pair.

Record length determines how long you can capture at full sample rate. This is where older scopes disappoint. A 2.5 kpt record at 2 GS/s covers about a microsecond — fine for a repetitive waveform, useless for catching an intermittent event.

If you are hunting rare glitches, record length and waveform capture rate matter far more than bandwidth.

Mixed signal and mixed domain

An MSO adds digital channels, which is what you want for embedded debug where you need to correlate a bus transaction with an analogue effect. The digital channels are cheap capability that is genuinely hard to add later.

An MDO adds a spectrum analyzer. This is more specialised, and worth paying for only if you regularly move between time and frequency domain on the same problem — RF-adjacent embedded work, EMI pre-compliance, switching supply noise.

Probes are not an accessory

Probes can represent a third of the value of a used scope package. A 1 GHz scope supplied with 200 MHz probes is a 200 MHz scope in practice.

Differential and current probes are expensive and frequently missing from used packages. If you are doing power electronics, a high-voltage differential probe is not optional and a scope listing without one is incomplete for your purposes.

Check the probe interface. TekVPI and similar active interfaces mean the scope can power and identify the probe, but also mean cheap passive probes will not give you the same functionality.

Licensed options travel unpredictably

Serial decode, advanced triggering, jitter analysis and application-specific packages are usually licence keys tied to the instrument serial. Some transfer with a sale, some do not.

Ask the seller for the installed option list as reported by the instrument itself, not from the original purchase order. What was bought and what is currently installed are not always the same thing.

Common questions

Is a handheld ScopeMeter a substitute for a bench scope?

For industrial troubleshooting, often yes — isolated channels let you measure floating circuits safely, which a bench scope cannot do without a differential probe. For design work, no.

Do bandwidth upgrade licences transfer when I buy used?

It depends on the manufacturer and the specific licence. Confirm in writing before purchase; assume it does not transfer unless told otherwise.

How old is too old?

Analogue front ends age well. The practical limits are record length, interface support and whether the manufacturer still calibrates the model.
