Handheld and bench multimeters make up the highest-turnover category in the used test equipment market, which means good stock is available and prices are competitive — but it is also where counterfeits concentrate.

Choosing between handheld and bench

Handheld meters are chosen for safety rating and durability rather than resolution. A CAT III 1000 V or CAT IV 600 V rating determines where the meter can legally and safely be used, and on a used purchase that rating is only meaningful if the input protection inside the meter is genuine.

Bench multimeters are chosen for resolution and interface. A 6.5-digit instrument such as the Keithley 2000 or Fluke 8845A is specified for production test and calibration work where GPIB or LAN control matters more than portability.

What we check before listing

Every meter is powered up and verified against a reference standard on DC volts, AC volts, resistance and current. The rotary switch is exercised through its full range, input jacks are checked for wear, and the case and display are inspected for damage.

On models where counterfeiting is common, we additionally verify serial number format, firmware behaviour and internal construction. Anything we cannot verify does not enter stock.
