Buying a used total station: what to check
Collimation, servo and tracking condition, EDM accuracy, batteries and field software compatibility — the checks that decide whether a used total station is a bargain or a repair bill.
Total stations are among the best used buys in professional equipment: they depreciate steeply in the first three years and then barely at all, and a well-maintained instrument from a decade ago still measures to its original specification. The risk is not age. It is a knock nobody mentioned.
Decide manual, servo or robotic first
A manual instrument is turned by hand. A servo instrument turns itself under control from the keypad. A robotic instrument is driven from the pole, which removes a person from the crew.
That last point is the whole economic argument. If you run a crew every day, a used robot pays for itself in labour within a season. If you set up twice a week for building layout, a manual instrument at a third of the price is the better decision, and the extra money is better spent on a good prism and tribrach.
Collimation is normal; a knock is not
Every total station drifts out of collimation with use, and correcting it is a five-minute field procedure. A seller saying an instrument needs collimating is being honest, not warning you off.
What matters is whether the instrument has been dropped. Ask directly. A hard knock can shift the trunnion axis or the EDM alignment, and neither is a field fix. The tell is a face-left versus face-right comparison that will not resolve to within specification no matter how carefully you adjust it.

Servos and tracking are the wear items
On robotic instruments, the servo drives and the tracking system do the work and take the wear. Run the instrument through full rotation in both axes and listen: a healthy servo is smooth and consistent, a failing one hesitates or whines at particular positions.
Test tracking properly by walking a prism, not by standing still. ATR, PowerSearch, Autolock and UltraTrac should reacquire a moving target quickly and hold it. An instrument that hunts, or loses lock at moderate distance, has a tracking fault that is a factory repair.
Magnetic drive systems such as Trimble's MagDrive have no gears to wear, which is one reason S-series instruments hold up well in used stock.
Check the EDM against a known distance
Angle accuracy is easy to verify. Distance accuracy needs a baseline. Measure a known distance in prism mode and again in reflectorless mode, at a realistic range rather than across a room.
Reflectorless performance degrades with age and with a dirty or misaligned EDM. A specification claiming 500 m that will not read reliably at 150 m onto a light-coloured surface tells you something the datasheet does not.
Batteries, chargers and the field software chain
Batteries are consumable and original packs on an older instrument are usually tired. Price at least one replacement into any purchase, and confirm the charger is present — chargers are separated from instruments constantly during liquidations.
Then check the software chain end to end. The instrument, the controller, the field software licence and the radio all have to work together. A Leica instrument expects Captivate or SmartWorx, Trimble expects Access, Topcon and Sokkia expect MAGNET Field — or any of them can be driven by Carlson SurvCE.
Tell the seller what your crew already runs. A cheap instrument that will not talk to your controller is not cheap.
What should come with it
At minimum: instrument, battery, charger, and hard case. Realistically you also need a tribrach, a prism and pole, and a tripod, and those add up to real money if they are missing.
A complete kit at a higher headline price is very often cheaper than a bare instrument plus the accessories you then have to buy separately.
Common questions
How old is too old for a total station?
Age matters far less than condition and connectivity. The practical limits are battery availability and whether the instrument can talk to a modern controller. Instruments from the mid-2000s onward are generally fine.
Do I need a manufacturer service certificate?
Only if your contracts or quality system require it. For most work, a documented collimation and baseline check is sufficient.
Can I use a Topcon prism with a Leica instrument?
Yes, provided you set the correct prism constant. For robotic tracking, the manufacturer's own 360 prism performs noticeably better.
What is a fair price for a used robotic total station?
