3D Laser Scanners

Terrestrial laser scanners and imaging systems for reality capture, BIM and as-built documentation.

Brands in this category: FARO, Leica Geosystems, Topcon, Trimble

Terrestrial laser scanners hold value well and are increasingly bought used by firms adding reality capture without committing to a new-price purchase.

Range, speed and what the job needs

Short-range scanners such as the BLK360 or FARO M70 are ideal for interiors, BIM verification and small as-builts. Long-range instruments such as the ScanStation P40 or Focus S350 are what you need for facades, infrastructure and open sites.

Scan speed matters mostly for how many setups you can complete in a day. Registration method matters more: in-field automatic registration, as on the RTC360 and Trimble X7, removes hours of office work per project.

Software is a real cost

The scanner is half the system. Cyclone, RealWorks, SCENE and their subscription models represent significant ongoing cost, and licences do not always transfer with used hardware.

We confirm in writing what software, licences and dongles are included, and check that the scanner has been through a recent calibration or on-site compensation cycle.

Common questions

Do scanner software licences transfer?

It varies by manufacturer. We confirm before sale rather than assuming, since this is often the largest hidden cost.

How accurate is a used scanner?

Range accuracy is stable over life. We verify against a control target and report the result.

Is a BLK360 enough for professional work?

For interiors, architecture and BIM verification, yes. For survey-grade control or long-range exterior capture, you need a P-series or equivalent.
