Power Supplies & Electronic Loads

Programmable DC power supplies, electronic loads and precision power analyzers.

Brands in this category: Keithley, Tektronix

Programmable supplies and electronic loads are bought as a pair for power electronics work: one drives the device under test, the other consumes its output under controlled conditions.

Linear versus switching

Linear supplies such as the Tektronix PWS4000 series produce very low output noise, which matters when powering sensitive analogue and RF circuits. They are heavier and less efficient, and that is the trade.

Switching supplies deliver far more power per unit volume and are the right choice for battery, motor and module testing where a millivolt of ripple is irrelevant.

Electronic loads

Constant current, constant voltage, constant resistance and constant power modes each answer a different question. Battery discharge testing needs constant current or constant power; supply regulation testing needs dynamic mode with a controllable slew rate.

Check the load's power derating curve. A 200 W load is rarely 200 W at low voltage, and this catches people out on battery work.

Common questions

Do used supplies hold their calibration?

Yes. The reference and control loop are stable; calibration corrects for drift and we can arrange it before despatch.

Can supplies be run in series or parallel?

Many can, for higher voltage or current. Confirm the model supports tracking rather than assuming it.

Is remote sense important?

Yes wherever cable drop matters. Without it your device sees less voltage than the display shows.
