SMUs source and measure simultaneously on the same terminals, which is what makes device characterisation practical. Keithley defined this category and its instruments dominate the used market.

Choosing by current and voltage envelope

The 2400 series covers general semiconductor, LED and sensor characterisation. The 2600B series adds TSP scripting for high-speed automated test and dual-channel operation in one chassis.

Low-current work is a separate decision. Sub-picoamp measurement requires instruments built for it — the 2635B, 2636B, 6430 and the 6517B electrometer — and the difference is in guarding and construction, not settings.

Cabling and fixturing matter

At femtoamp levels the triaxial cable and test fixture dominate the measurement. An SMU sold without its correct low-noise cabling cannot demonstrate its specification.

What is the difference between an SMU and a power supply?

An SMU sources and measures precisely on the same terminals, with four-quadrant operation and current compliance. A supply sources only.

Do I need TSP scripting?

Only for automated production test where the instrument must execute test sequences without host round-trips. For bench characterisation, no.

Is the 2450 worth the premium over a 2400?

It adds a touchscreen with graphical trace display and higher resolution. For interactive bench work the difference is substantial; for rack-mounted automation, less so.
