Function generators and spectrum analyzers are stable, long-lived instruments, and the used market is driven by laboratories consolidating rather than by equipment failing.

Function and arbitrary generators

For most bench work the deciding specifications are output bandwidth, rise time and arbitrary waveform memory. Two channels with independent control is worth more in practice than a higher headline frequency.

Check the output amplifier under load. A generator that meets specification into a high impedance but sags into 50 ohm has a failing output stage.

Spectrum and real-time analyzers

Swept spectrum analyzers show what is there on average. Real-time analyzers such as the RSA series show transient and intermittent signals that a swept instrument misses entirely, which is what interference hunting requires.

USB-based analyzers depend on host software. Confirm the software version supplied still installs on a current operating system.
