Locating equipment is bought for one reason: not hitting something buried. That makes reliability and operator confidence more important than feature count, and it is why crews replace like-for-like rather than switching brands.
An electromagnetic locator traces a signal on a conductive line — metal pipe, cable, or a sonde pushed into a non-conductive one. It is fast, accurate on depth, and covers the majority of daily locating work.
Ground penetrating radar sees what carries no signal: plastic water main, concrete duct, voids, rebar. It is slower, needs interpretation skill, and is the tool you reach for when the electromagnetic locator finds nothing but the drawings say something is there. Most serious locating operations end up owning both.
A locator receiver without its matched transmitter is half a tool. Transmitter output power is what determines whether you can trace a long or deeply buried line, and a 10 W or 33 W unit does work a small transmitter simply cannot.
We pair receivers and transmitters, test them against a live traced line, and confirm depth readout, current measurement and every supplied frequency mode. Clamps, A-frames and connection leads are listed individually rather than assumed.
Most manufacturers recommend annual verification. We test against a known traced line before listing and can arrange manufacturer calibration on request.
No. Frequencies and signal coding are brand-specific. Buy them as a matched pair unless you already own one half.
If you locate plastic pipe, or work where drawings are unreliable, eventually yes. For metallic utilities with good records, an electromagnetic locator covers most jobs.
