Buying used biomedical test equipment
Electrical safety analyzers, patient simulators, defibrillator and infusion analyzers — what to check on accessories, calibration and software before buying used.
Biomedical test equipment holds value unusually well, and the used market is driven by hospital departments and independent service organisations replacing ageing fleets. The instruments themselves are robust; the risk in a used purchase is almost always accessories and software rather than the instrument.
Accessories are half the value
A ProSim 8 without its SpO2 adapters and ECG cable sets cannot do the job it was bought for. Manufacturer-specific SpO2 adapters — Masimo, Nellcor, Nihon Kohden, Philips, Nonin — are expensive individually and are frequently separated from the instrument during a department clear-out.
The same applies to defibrillator analyzers: paddle adapters and hands-free adapters are model-specific, and an Impulse 7000DP without the adapters for the defibrillators you actually service is incomplete.
Insist on an itemised list of what is included, by part number. A photograph of the case contents is worth asking for and is usually easy for a seller to provide.
Calibration status drives price
Hospital biomedical departments and accredited service organisations generally cannot put an out-of-calibration analyzer into service. This creates a substantial and predictable price gap between a unit with current calibration and an identical unit without.
For a high-value instrument, buying with fresh accredited calibration included is usually cheaper overall than buying without and arranging it separately, because it saves a shipping cycle.
Ask which laboratory performed the calibration and whether the certificate lists as-found data.
Software licences and automation
Ansur is the automation layer for Fluke Biomedical instruments, and the plug-ins are licensed per instrument family. An ESA615 without the corresponding Ansur plug-in still works manually, but you lose the automated test sequences that justify the platform.
Confirm whether the seller is transferring software, whether the licence is tied to a dongle or a machine, and whether the version is compatible with a currently supported operating system. Older versions occasionally will not install on current Windows builds.
What to check by instrument type
Electrical safety analyzers: verify the mains lead and applied part leads are present, and that leakage measurement responds correctly to a known load. The internal relays are the wear item.
Patient simulators: run every parameter against a monitor. Battery condition is the usual weak point on older units, and replacement packs are not always available.
Gas flow analyzers: internal gas sensors have a finite life and are a significant replacement cost. Ask when the sensors were last replaced, not just when the unit was last calibrated.
Infusion analyzers: the fluidics are consumable. Tubing sets and reservoirs are inexpensive but are frequently missing.
Electrosurgical analyzers: the internal load bank should step cleanly through its range. Test the REM/ARM contact quality function specifically.
Radiation and imaging QA equipment
RaySafe and Victoreen instruments have an additional consideration: some survey meters and dosimetry equipment ship with radioactive check sources, and those sources have transport and import implications that vary by jurisdiction.
Clarify before purchase whether a source is included and who is responsible for the paperwork. A modular system such as the RaySafe X2 also requires the base unit and sensor to be a matched, compatible pair — buying a sensor without a base is a common and costly error.
Common questions
Can a hospital use a used analyzer?
Yes. What matters is that the instrument is calibrated and fit for purpose, not that it was bought new. Most biomedical departments already run mixed-age fleets.
Are gas sensors expensive to replace?
They are a meaningful proportion of a used gas flow analyzer's price. Establish sensor age before buying rather than after.
Do I need Ansur?
Only if you want automated test sequences and templated reporting. All the instruments operate manually without it.
