An optical automatic level is cheap, needs no batteries and is entirely adequate for site levelling. A digital level reads a bar-coded staff automatically, removes reading errors and records the data, which is what monitoring and rail contracts require.

Precision is the deciding factor: a 0.3 mm per km instrument such as a Leica LS15 or Trimble DiNi 0.3 is specified for settlement monitoring, where a 1.8 mm per km optical level is not.

What we check

Levels are two-peg tested and the compensator is checked for free movement and correct damping. A sticking compensator is the most common fault and is not always obvious in a short check.

Theodolites are collimated and both faces are compared. Staves, tripods and cases are listed separately so you can buy only what you are missing.

What is a two-peg test?

A field procedure that checks the line of sight is truly horizontal by comparing readings from two positions. We perform it on every level before listing.

Do I need a digital level?

Only if you need recorded data, high precision, or you are working to a specification that requires it. Otherwise an optical level is far better value.

Are bar-coded staves interchangeable?

No. Each manufacturer uses its own code pattern. Confirm the staff matches the instrument.
