Handheld XRF is the fastest way to know what an alloy actually is, which is why it sits at the centre of positive material identification, scrap sorting and incoming goods inspection. The used market is active because instruments last far longer than the depreciation schedule suggests.
XRF cannot measure carbon. That is a physical limit, not a specification gap, and it is the single most important thing to understand before buying. For separating 304 from 316, or verifying nickel alloys, XRF is fast and definitive.
If you need carbon — separating L-grades, verifying carbon steel, calculating carbon equivalent — you need LIBS or OES. Handheld LIBS such as the Niton Apollo, Hitachi Vulcan or SciAps Z-200 C+ does it in seconds at the point of inspection. Portable arc-spark OES such as the PMI-MASTER Smart is slower and heavier but gives full quantitative low-alloy analysis.
Many PMI contractors end up owning both, using XRF for volume screening and LIBS only where carbon matters.
The X-ray tube has a finite life measured in operating hours, and the detector degrades with age and thermal cycling. Neither is visible from the outside, which is why a low price on an unverified analyzer is rarely a bargain.
We run every instrument against certified reference materials across the grades it claims to identify, and report tube hours, detector performance, shutter operation and battery health separately from calibration date. Where an instrument no longer reads within specification, we say so and price it as a parts unit rather than describing it as working.
Handheld XRF analyzers generate ionising radiation and are regulated equipment in most jurisdictions. Depending on your state or country you may need to register the device, appoint a radiation safety officer, or hold a licence before taking delivery.
Shipping is also controlled. We confirm the destination requirements before accepting an order rather than discovering a problem at customs, and we can supply the radiation survey and leak test documentation most regulators ask for.
No. XRF physically cannot detect carbon. If you need to separate 304L from 304, or verify carbon steel grades, you need a LIBS or OES instrument.
In most jurisdictions yes, in some form — registration, a radiation safety officer, or a full licence. Requirements vary by state and country. Check before you order and we will confirm what we can ship where.
Typically several thousand operating hours. We report tube hours where the instrument logs them, so you know what life remains rather than guessing from age.
Yes, provided it reads within specification against certified reference materials and is calibrated. We verify against CRMs before listing and can supply calibration before despatch.
Prices shown are indicative for a single tested unit. Quantity pricing, dealer terms and blanket orders are quoted individually. Send the list and we will respond within one business day.
