Phantoms are the reference objects that make imaging QA measurable. They do not wear out electrically, but they do degrade physically, and that is what determines whether a used phantom is worth buying.

What to inspect

Tissue-mimicking ultrasound phantoms dry out and delaminate with age, and a dried phantom gives attenuation readings that are simply wrong. Check for fluid loss, surface cracking and separation at the scanning window.

Mammography and CT phantoms are more robust, but target integrity matters — a chipped fibre or displaced speck group invalidates accreditation scoring.

Accreditation compatibility

Phantoms used for ACR accreditation must match the current pattern. An older phantom may be physically perfect but no longer accepted for submission.
